OGC Meet

Business Value Session

“The critical task is to provide organizations with information that facilitates comprehension of value, and infusion of products with irresistible functionality”. Adapted from a C. K. Prahalad and G. Hamel quote. The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is profoundly interested in understanding, promoting, and amplifying the business value of its standards and programs. By effectively providing information in this arena, the OGC will better support both its own interoperability initiatives as well as those of its member organizations. It is with this dual support objective that the OGC pursues the efforts of defining the business value of its standards, and providing tools to further identify the business value of participation within the OGC community and infusion of OGC standards.

The purpose of the OGC Business Value Committee (BVC) is to directly engage business professionals from the OGC membership and the wider geospatial community in activities to identify, organize and promote the business value of OGC standards. These activities include a long-term vision to develop a pervasive value platform for using OGC and complementary standards. The key to breaking down barriers to interoperability is ‘Business Value’, i.e. being able to explain the value in terms of return on investment (ROI) or societal benefit. During the session attendees will gain an insight into the depth and breadth or OGC standards worldwide, understand how they complement ISO standards and also where the standards are included in government policy. Some preliminary findings will also be presented from the recent global survey OGC issued on the business value of open standards.
