Abstract

Karnataka GIS Portal, a step towards G-revolution
Until recently, the use of advances in geospatial technology was confined to defence establishments and applied mostly in wars and war-games. It has now started permeating to developmental departments and the people have recognized the roles geospatial information can play in nation building. The Karnataka State Remote Sensing Applications Centre (KSRSAC), since inception in the year 1986, has been generating and analysing geospatial data for the entire State of Karnataka with updated remote sensing and GIS technologies and providing these data to the GoK departments for planning and executing developmental activities. The KSRSAC has generated 58 GIS layers, which are of immense use for both administrative and developmental departments such as Survey Settlement and Land Records, Revenue, Forest, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Agriculture, Horticulture, Watershed Development, Water Resources and Municipal Administration. The Centre generated this voluminous geospatial data using state-of-the-art Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry and GIS technologies. Recently, the Centre has developed a web-portal namely “Karnataka GIS Portal” to publish these 58 GIS layers for the use of GoK Departments and citizens. The KSRSAC is always looking for using advanced geospatial technologies to generate, analyse and disseminate spatial data for the use of GoK and others and taking part in the Nation Building Process.
