Dr Venkateshwara Rao Group Director, Water Resources Group, National Remote Sensing Centre

Bio

Field of Expertise: Remote Sensing and GIS applications to water Resources Assessment ,Planning and management: Irrigation water management, hydrology, soil erosion, sedimentation and watershed management, Water resources planning and development and Climate change impact on water resources. Major achievements: He is responsible for development of new RS& GIS based application techniques and successful implementation of application projects in the areas of irrigation, reservoir sedimentation, interlinking of rivers, hydrology studies, snow, and hydropower. He has been providing technology support to water resources management in the country as Member Secretary, NNRM-SC-W. The most significant contributions are, development satellite data based technique for monitoring the irrigation potential in irrigation projects and a technique to assess the capacity loss due to sedimentation in reservoirs. He has successfully demonstrated the operational utility satellite data based baseline inventory and performance evaluation of several canal irrigation projects across the country .He was a key resource person from ISRO and contributed significantly towards the conceptualization and development of India WRIS web portal and studies on interlinking of Rivers Project. He is guiding basin-wise assessment of water resources and development of flood and snow melt runoff forecast models through distributed hydrological modeling activities in NRSC. As a Team Leader ,he has received ISRO Team Excellence awards for Satellite data based Irrigation Infrastructure Monitoring (AIBP) Project during 2010 and India-WRIS project during 2011.
